Graphic Design for Social Change: 9/11 Advertisement Campaign (2022)

For this project we were asked to create a series of advertisements addressing a specific social issue, and in turn advocating for progress or changes for said issue. For a topic as sensitive as 9/11, I took a great deal of consideration in how to adress it in this campaign. I decided the focus should be on the human impact and aftermath of this tragic event rather than pandering to any patriotic approach or blanket lip-service done to honor the victims and their families. Here, this series advocates for setting up support systems for survivors and their families, as well as recognizing the individual humans that were lost rather than just the collective or the towers themselves.

The first two images play on the idea of 9/11 being a repeated event of trauma in the lives of survivors due to the lasting health effects; how the moment held the world at a standstill, and ever since then the event has never stopped in its trauma, playing into perpetuity. The third image of the recovered items of the victims represents their individuality and personhood, rather than being represented as a number on a death toll.
